Conscious of the scarce supply of drawing exhibitions available to the public, we invited artists to join our unique competition and showcase their concepts reflecting a view of the significance and role of drawing in contemporary art.
The biennale competition acknowledges the universal value of drawing and is proudly brought to you by the Polish Art Foundation (PAF), based in Melbourne, Australia.
For the purpose of outlining the scope of this competition, drawing is defined as the record of a tool moving across a surface in the form of an artistic expression. The work can be presented in pencil, crayon, conte, charcoal, pen or combined with a brush using any of the previous tools, on paper or other suitable material. The organiser also invites works created by utilising mechanical and electronic means such as photography, film, video, and new media as long as drawing is a part of the creative process.

HISTORY
In 2001, the Foundation established a special bi-annual event dedicated to the memory of its generous donor Tomasz Ostrowski, namely the International Drawing Biennale to emphasise the significance and role of drawing as an art form among both established and emerging contemporary artists in today’s society.
This event, was open to both local and international entries and provided a unique window into the exclusive world of drawing in all its forms, enabling an exchange of ideas and trends among artists from all corners of the globe. The final event of the series was held in 2019, which marked the 10th exhibition. The competition had attracted over 850 works with contributing artists from 30 countries.
In 2023, the biennale was reinvigorated and renamed the Contemporary Drawing Biennale. This event was held at No Vacancy Gallery in inner Melbourne and attracted over 80 works from 50 artists.
